WFB Empire Ostland

"Well they're a mercenary bunch of curs, and you definitely don't want to stand between them and the pub, but damned if they don't get the job done."

This army is black and white for Collingwood (I inherited the paintjob) but in the empire that is really Ostland. Who are to the north of the empire, West of kislev. Ostland is covered with forest and has very poor trade with the rest of the empire. Main trade income coming from fur. Basically they're a bunch of poor, white trash, inbred, drunken mountain men.
Cos they're poor, Ostlanders when they get cash are famous for spending it ostentatiously. eg on double barrel firearms.
Really the empires armies main job is NPCs for warband missions and campaigns. And storage for other armies allies and Dogs of War. eg Cannon, Empire Militia/Skaven Manthing Slaves, Ogres
This army is mostly state troopers. but a good few militia as well.
A Bullshead is a common Ostland symbol.

This is also my 'good guys' army. Of far less priority than any of the others. If its Table Top Ready its lucky.

  • Captain on barded horse
  • Wizard on foot, priest of taal, nature played as amber order wiz
  • Wizard on horse (heavens)
  • Engineer with repeater rifle
  • Hand Gunners. Hand gunner champs with Double barrel Long rifles.
  • Spearmen. Some fur.
  • Halberdiers. Really guys with axes. Ostland is pretty much covered with forest. GS Fur cloaks.
  • Militia. Free Company detachments.
  • Great Swords. Nobles men or knights of Taal.
  • Huntsman archers.
  • 2 Cannon. Also used as light cannon DoW.
  • Ogres, prob with great weaps. Ostland is known for its Ogres. Also for chaos DoW. I like the Ogre kingdoms.
  • I'd like some light cavalry as well. maybe DoW. Ostland used to be good horsemen but not known for it now.
  • The General Lee. Steam Tank
    Empire Army
    Engineer
    Priest of Taal
    Celestial Wizard
    Handgunners
    Spearmen with support
    Militia
    Cannon
So hail to Ostland. Land of the drunk, smelly, cheerfully taunting and
    violent.
I've been taking these guys up from a few painted, mainly for campaign
NPCs, and the rest base coated to a tabletop ready 1000pt force.

From the foothills fo the middle Mountains near the border of hockland.

This is my tertiary WFB army mostly made up of inherited models from
WFBv6 boxed sets. So I have lots of spearmen and handgunners.
I really don't intend on buying anything new for it but might end up
getting a box of the new models, swordsmen maybe, or something else to
help break up the repetition of the old models. The old and new models
seem to fit together pretty well from my look at the GW store near work
    .

My main knowledge of Ostland comes from the Mordhiem ostland warband
    rules. ausWD271

For example, Firearms are highly prized. Especially around my guys
    villages.
My handgunner regiments have marksmen with converted double barrel
    longrifles.
The general troops have generally cheap leather armour but the
occasional one has fine engraved armour or gold arm bands etc (Nouveau
    riche)

I have a few with beer bellies (Bull rush skill).
I'll convert a few to taunt the enemy. (ideas?)
Add some kegs, beer and bottles in hand, etc

    Other notes I've collected

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ostland_%28Warhammer%29

Symbol a bull. I'll use this in the heraldry.
To an extent I do find this a little odd. They have beastmen all over
and probably minotaurs who they probably are not fond of, and I
wouldn't think cows'd be great in a mountainous forest covered area.

I'll add bits of fur to the various models, it being one of the main
trades of the area. A very easy sculpt.

The Ostland colour scheme, a black and white quartered one, is
very different from that of the state capital, which is red (lower left
    and
    upper right) quartered with yellow.
Not that I intend to use the state capital colours.

Ostland state troops are mainly spearmen. Villagers trained as reserve and drilled with them.
As they have lots of trees and they're easy weapons
to mass produce and use to defend forested areas.

I've added a few halberdiers, not so much state troops as militia
    woodsmen from the forest.
I've used a mix of militia and converted spearmen. Sticking on some fur
    cloaks etc

I've seen some people say that their Ostland state army is very
regimented. I'd expect Ostland armies in general to be full of militia.
Very small population density of barely subsistance towns. In case of
trouble call in the hunters and guys with axes who have to deal with
beastmen while they do their normal jobs.

My present 1000 pointer (vaguely at a crummy table top ready paintjob)
    under v6 is:

    Ostland 1000Pts - Empire Army

    1 Duke Eblingstoke. Captain @ 50+ Pts 86
General; Full Plate Armor 8; Warhorse 10, barded 4. lance 4, hw
         Enchanted Shield [10]

A minor noble who has made some cash. Has his own private forces plus a
lot of the kin from the surrounding towns go out with his warband as it
usually seems a good source of cash and a good scrap.

    1 Master Engineer @ 70 Pts
         Repeater Handgun

Initially hired by the Noble to form his artillery units he has found a
lot of his income has come from the troopers who want him to upgrade
their weapons. A good part of reason for the sucess of the noble is the
number of kin who go home after a campaign with handguns.

1 Priest of Taal, rules as Battle Wizard of the Amber Order @ 95 Pts
         ; Magic Level 2; Lore of Beasts;

A converted necromunda goliath, Lots of fur, big wooden staff,
antlers on his head cut from a bretonnian.

1 Battle Wizard of the Celestial Order @ 114 Pts
Magic Level 2; Lore of Heaven, barded horse

I'll leave this guy as pretty standard BattleWiz. Hanging around
looking at the sky seems the sort of thing a wizard would do in
    Ostland.

    10 Handgunners @ 118 Pts
         Empire Handgun; Musician

         1 Marksman/Jaeger @ [25] Pts
              Hochland Double Barrel Long Rifle

These are pretty statetrooper right now, ie neat quartering. But Im
considering making any more I paint look more militialike. Hunters
    from the woods.

    17 Spearmen @ 198 Pts
         Spear; Light Armour; Full Command

         5 Detachment - Free Company @ [25] Pts
              2ndWeapon

         5 Detachment - Handgunners @ [40] Pts
              Empire Handgun

    1 Great Cannon @ 100 Pts
         3 Crew @ [0] Pts

    10/0 Greatswords @ 192 Pts
         Full command

         5/2 Detachment - Halberdiers @ [30] Pts
              Halberd; Light Armour

This is part of the reason the kin join the Duke. His best guys have fancy
armour, nice swords and obviously some awesome grog. They just never back down!
I havn't painted (or even base coated) these guys yet but plan to give
them a bit of individuality. eg pistol at side, fancy armour, gold etc

The Halberdiers I like as a model concept (woodsmen) but would sort of
like to have more state troopery since they are part of the greatswords
regiment so would seem to be more full time soldiers. But maybe the
great swords just inspire the respect of the axers and they hang around
    them whacking things.

    Casting Pool: 6
    Dispel Pool: 4
    Models in Army: 63

Will add some huntsmen. But I only have 5. damn the new minimum 10
    rules in v7.
Huntsmen seem very Ostlandy. I'd add more archers but don't have the
    models.

    More handgunners.
More spearmen unless I can think of something better to do with the
models. Might convert to more axers.

I'd like to add some light cavalry. Ostland used to known for their
cavalry before the great war against chaos, but pistoliers don't seem
    to suit.

I'd like some Ogres. Partly as DOW for my other armies.
Someday I'll scratch build a steamtank (the general lee) but thats far
    in the future I expect.

    Knights of Taal

Knights of Taal live out in the wilderness of Ostland protecting its people. Much like rangers. They are a holy order of the nature god taal. But when they deal with outsiders they refer to themselves as Knights of the Forest to avoid trouble from the sigmarite city slickers.

They live off the land. Hunting beastmen and other creatures they wander into Ostlands forests. They are one of the towns main warning systems giving the men of the towns states reserve the fetch their spears and form up.

They are at home with animals but often find themselves walking as ostland is not the most hospitable for horses they often travel and fight from the ground.

As they usually act alone in battle they can be captains, join with state troop greatswords or other knights.
So in game terms they are more likely to be in skirmish or RPGs.
