All expected to be able to repair and maintain their equipment. He reached over and lay one power-gauntleted hand on his head and crushed it with his fingers. He flung the corpse to the side, impatiently wiped away the runes the ganger had been scribing on the casing of the sentry and flipped open the access cover, mumbling as he swept his helmet lamp over the insides of the machine. "No power at all. No damn runes are going to connect wire that's come loose. Ah, Here." The other gangers stood where they could see, but well out of contact with the marine. They saw him grab a piece of wire with incongruously delicate fingers, still covered in Lems blood, strip back some of the insulator with claws extended from his armoured fingers and rewrap it around a protruding knob of metal. The repair was elegant and simple. He stood back, pressed down on the starter, without a word of incantation, and the sentry gun Whirred, extended its sensors and began its standard observation arc. He threw a target tester in front and the gun blasted it apart with a blast of laser light. He then froze. The gangers looked about them in confusion. Master Sorcerer Bagavar floated not far away, standing on his Sky Shark. His robes floating gently about his armour even though he was perfectly still and there was no wind. He was difficult to look at, the shifting patterns of his armour uncomfortable to the eye. *IW* turned to face him, moving like an automation. It was obvious he had no choice but to stare up. The Sorcerer spoke perfectly calmly, to the Iron Warrior and the Monkey gangers alike. "Do you know that mans homeworld?" Nearly all the gangers who were there to learn of the Machine were from Ig. They knew of Lem as a mechanic of a different style to what they had learnt at home and knew he was not from their world, but other than that they had no clue. He had been with the warband longer than any of they. To them his home was Negasonic. The Iron Warrior was also silent. "He was from Necromunda. The Homeworld of many of your fellow gangers. Not a few Marines. Of the Lord Rizzo. and of Me." The gangers were hard men. Brought up in the pits of Ig, selected as good enough stock to survive the trials of the warband, not a few of had even seen action that would have made a veteran tyranid fighter of their home spire quail with terror but none of them had even been as terrified of the calm voice of the man standing in front of them. And they were not even the object of the wizards anger. Who knew what was going through the mind of the man with the sorcerers countrymans blood on his gauntlet. The wizards masked face looked down at one the gangers. "And what did you learn from this Marines technique?" There was no choice but to answer for the man. "Very similar to what we learnt at home, sire. Basic tracing of the wiring to the flaw and a repair." He nodded. "And of Lems technique, before it was interupted?" "Quite different. He never even openned the hatch to examine the mechanism before he started his hocus... His inscriptions and chants." "So, assuming it would have worked you would have learned much?" "Yes sire." "Would it have worked?" "I don't know sire." "No." The Iron Warrior finally spoke. "I see. And you thought the best way to teach these men that was to kill Lem?" "The best way to fix the machine was." "So all these men, Generally ignorant of the ways of the machine god, were here just to fix this quite unimportant machine that will probably end up stripped for parts anyway." The disk rose slightly higher, drawing their gaze with it. The wizard was glaring directly at the Iron Warrior now. "Do not think this is like some pointless black crusade where each life, each piece of knowledge is to be wasted. Or worse an imperial army, where any knowledge not to your liking is to be destroyed out of fear and love of the safety of ignorance. And if it was, marine, remember who would be the commisar around here." He started to float away when he paused. "Marine, go and train with the assault forces. I'm sure you have much to teach them. You men, tend to the sentry then return to your captain." The gangers clustered around the sentry finishing their ministrations, they saw the marine tech adept pause, looking over at those who gloried in the Blood god. Chain axes and power hammers smashing into the shields they used for training.
Iron Monkies become more assault oriented after IW joins assault training. Red squad. Plasma pistols, spiked armour, martial arts, short heavy combat swords, bringing science to the art of assault. The new ex-blood angels recruits have taken to this style of fighting with gusto. Allowing themselves to feel the rage their primarch gifted them with not trying to supress it like their deluded brethren which in the end only drives them insane. The Blood Angels were kicked from their chapter for using the enemies weapons against them. Indeed one has now turned almost purely to two xenos weapons, a massive ork chopper in one hand and a fine dark eldar stiletto in the other. His pistol usually stays holstered.
Once those amoung us fought against the machine. But we know the machines wants to serve us. But look at our greatest champions, the Oblitorators the perfect merging of man, the machine and the warp. Or of course the Avatar of the Machine God. A dreadnaught, a champion of chaos at one with the machine and the spirit of the machine is now his.
And what does it mean to pledge yourself to one of the chaos powers? Quite simply it is insanity. Your mind becomes warped and limited, narrowly focused.
This is why we follow the undivided path.
Bagavar may follow tzeentch but often you find this level of focus with Sorcerors or other specialists such as the followers of the Machine. There is great strength to be gained. The one of our brethren that impresses me the most with his skill at walking the fine path of sanity and worship is Krom the Assault Champion. He has been touched by the warp, as you may noticed by the extra arm. Every battle he is in close combat, bathed in the blood of his enemies, spuring his own warriors into greater aggression. No-one could be surprised if he were to turn himself to Khorne. Yet he does not.
No bezerker could wait patiently for the perfect moment to strike. He uses the Rage of Khorne, the strategy of Tzeentch. Obviously he is closer to khorne than many, indeed he is one of the few who could make themselves understood to a bezerker but his will is always his own.
On a string of stars fairly cut of from the rest of the imperium by strong warp currents. Negasonic rides them with ease. The warps pulls them here. Something great is happenning.
3H closed both his eyes. Two raptors landed almost silently to either side. The two plasma pistols aimed to keep the sorcerer in a crossfire.
NewGuy nodded "Yes you could order your men to fire. Or even evicerate me with your blades, but then the sniper aimed your middle head just might put a bolt into it."
The raptors knew who that meant. New guy had been spending a lot of time with the machine cultists, trying to bring greater understanding between the ways of magic and machine. They could imagine what loyalty the iron monkey sniper Minos, another relative newcomer, would hold if called upon.
New guy could feel the energy as Bagavar floated on his sky shark. He turned to face him, silently waiting.
"Do you know what you have done?"
"I pointed out that I am aware of the dangers of the galaxy."
"You have potentially made a very dangerous enemy."
"I report to directly to you. He is only a squad commander. I don't even know if he's Astartes! What can he do?"
"He has been travelling the paths of the warp for probably longer than any of us. He is to be respected. I have fought by his side and been glad he was with us. And You must understand politics and different societies far better if you are to live long in this galaxy. You have learnt little of the warband. It is not like the Legion you fled from." His voice warmed "It is after all, a warband of Tzeentch."
New guy played with the projection. He was vassal to Lord Bagavar who had nominal control of the entire warband especially in non-military activity. There were a few in the warband who Bagavar never ordered, at most made 'suggestions'. How much of this was respect how much was rank or something more New guy wasn't sure.
All the terminators seemed a law unto their own. Darius seemed to think he deserved equal rank or possibly even higher rank to Lord Bagavar but, few others in the warband seemed to rank him much higher than a squad leader. Mr Woo however seemed to be happy enough to be left alone in his workshops yet seemed accorded some the most respect of the warband. The dreadnought Avatar of the Machinegod. Well anyone could see why even a Lord would at most make suggestions to a god incarnate. The oblitorators, well aside from that they were silent or unintelligible to most, the warband seemed to hold them up as holy.
And then there was 3H. Bill, Ted and Fred. He also seemed to rank along with those other understandable luminaries of the warbands political landscape. The raptor champion. He even seemed to outrank the other sorcerers. Yet New Guy himself knew he could order nearly all the squad leaders and they would obey without question. And he was without a doubt the lowest ranked of the Sorcerors in the band.
He would have found this much easier if the warband had been in battle but his only fights had been with Bagavar and the other sorcerors driving the ratmen.
Certainly when it came to thought patterns dealing with command structure he still thought like a marine. Too long from human contact the old force taught patterns slip on too easily. These aren't marines they are chaos warriors.
Yet maybe marines are exactly right.
He changed the structure of society assuming a missing top level figure.
Bagavar led sorcs who led troops
Woo led fire support
3H led assault
but who was this Chaos Lord who commanded those three? Who was this Lord who it seemed was his commander?"
"Rizzo. You will meet him soon.
The details are wrong but your conclusion is correct.
So you are of equal rank to 3H?
A chill swept thru him. "No but I do not wish to position myself between you and him. Why are you here for me?"
"Because of my skill with the ratmen."
"How many others of the warband even know of the ratmen?"
"Not many. Delgado, Manson. Some blue squad, the chosen."
"Have you even heard of them from the others?"
"No."
"No mention of our thousands upon millions of new allies in this region of space. Did this not strike you as odd?"
"It never came up until now."
"And you never mentioned them yourself. A man who by his own words is here for his skill at working with the ratman. No idle boasts? Casual namedrops?"
"No. I wouldn't do that."
"Everyone would."
He was silent a moment.
"You placed a hex on me."
Bagavar laughed "Of course. I'm a sorceror! Its what we do. I'm just better at it than you. Thats the best kind of spell. No flashy fireworks, the target dosn't even know it happened. Now you have to decide how to use this knowledge. Do you let it slip to the warband about the skaven? Yet you know I wanted it kept secret. But it would vastly increase your standing and possibly stop 3H bothering you.
I see you have not failed to notice Darius rather low standing. Pretty much came from Woo treating him the way 3H is starting to treat you. Rather more humor and less menace from Woo, more explosives though." He laughed again.
